John, I'll agree with you about Newcastle. Total rip off.

The golf on Kitsap is some of the best in the PNW, no doubt, as well as a good value. That being said, I don't feel like I'm playing golf in Scotland while negotiating the trees at McCormick Woods.

If the conversation is merely about value, I would choose the Olympic Course as my home track. For a unique golfing experience, however, and something you might only do once a summer, I'd choose Chambers Bay.

Is one round at Chambers Bay worth 3-4 at the Olympic Course? I'd say yes!

Couldn't agree more Brian! I nearly aced #9 as well. The pin was front left and I landed my approach on the left fringe. It spun right and almost rolled in. That hole will be a great viewing spot during the US Amateur and US Open. One of those guys will dunk one!

Thanks for the comment!

Scott, thanks for your comment. I haven't been back out to Chambers Bay since reviewing it in June, but would like to make another visit.

In terms of the greens, I think the Amateur plays a part in that discussion, but really it is about the grass. It's fescue, not bent. That means it looks different and rolls different. It also takes a few years to mature before the grounds crew can start cutting it to a 10+ on the stimp-meter, so the criticism is a bit premature.

The day I played it, the greens looked beautiful and rolled just fine. Putting uphill was slow, and downhill putts were relatively fast. The most important thing? They rolled true.

Chambers Bay nearly tops my list (#2) in terms of golf in Washington, resting comfortably behind Sahalee CC. And that is with the golf course's current conditions. Five years from now Chambers Bay will likely take the #1 spot.

Chambers Bay plays a different game, one that you will likely enjoy if you haven't experienced true links golf yet. Like Bandon and Pacific Dunes, Chambers Bay is hard, and fast. And is located in a harsh, salt water environment where the grass isn't always green.

If you want soft, manicured greens head to one of the parkland golf courses that dominate the Kitsap Peninsula. If you want a taste of Scotland and a golf experience that will stay with you for months, head to Chambers Bay.

I'd love to hear your opinion after you play it. Stop back by and leave a comment, if you don't mind.

Thanks!

We are headed there later this month (July) Cannot wait. I would be interested to hear about current conditions. How are the greens? July in the Pacific Northwest could not give better growing conditions. Is it just that they are choosing to not cut them low to keep them on the path to the 2010 US Amateur?

Any recent recon would be great to hear! Anyone that has been there recently would be great to hear from.

If you're comparing it to Newcastle, you're comparing it to the most overpriced course in the state so yeah, it's a better deal than that. Compared to just about anywhere else around here -- Gold Mountain, Trophy Lake, Washington National, McCormick Woods, etc etc etc -- it's nowhere close to as good a value.
